Where this mechanic stands
This is the most precisely described feature the publisher has published. Warhammer Community’s announcement of 12 December 2025 states that you will be able to customise your force — its name, its colour scheme and its heraldry, down to its traits and tactics — and adds, in as many words, that you can make your Total War army match your tabletop collection, or create a new thematic colour scheme. Everything else about the game is described in a clause; this is described in a paragraph.
What the tabletop establishes
That paragraph is aimed at a specific person, and it is worth naming who. In Warhammer 40,000, painting an army is not a preliminary to playing it — for a large part of the hobby it is the hobby, and a collection carries a chapter name, a colour scheme and a history the owner invented. The tabletop rules have supported that for decades through successor chapters and regiment traits. A video game that lets you reproduce your own force is speaking to people who already have one, and it is the clearest signal so far that this game knows which audience it is licensed to.
Naming your force, choosing its colour scheme and heraldry, and setting its traits and tactics — the most detailed single feature the publisher has described so far.
Tabletop identity, as established by Games Workshop. It says nothing about the video game. What has actually been shown
The announcement named four things: name, colour scheme, heraldry, and traits and tactics. The publisher’s current description of the game, read on its store listing on 4 September 2026, is more precise on the mechanical half and settles one question this page previously left open. It splits customisation into three named categories — devastating tactical abilities, signature traits, and arcane wargear — and states the scope explicitly: you tailor your faction’s combat philosophy for both campaign and battle. So it is not confined to one army or to one battle. What remains unstated is everything quantitative: no interface, no depth, no limits, and no indication of what a signature trait or a piece of arcane wargear actually does.
What to watch next
The open question is where the cosmetic ends and the mechanical begins. If traits and tactics are a real system, then a custom force is a build — and a game whose armies are player-defined has to balance around configurations nobody at the studio chose. If they are light flavour attached to a paint scheme, the feature is a hobby tribute rather than a strategy layer, which is perfectly legitimate but a different promise. The wording puts them in the same sentence as the colour scheme, which tells you nothing about their weight. Nothing further has been announced in the eight months since. Information correct as of 18 August 2026.
What is not known
These questions have no published answer as of 12 December 2025. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.
