Where this setting stands
The Great Rift is the warp storm that tore across the galaxy from end to end and opened the era this game is set in. The publisher has named the Era Indomitus; it has not mentioned the Rift itself in any material we were able to open, so nothing on this page describes the video game. What follows is the setting’s own background, from Games Workshop, and the open question it raises for a campaign map.
What the tabletop establishes
The Rift split Imperial space along its length, cutting whole regions off from Terra and from the astronomical beacon that makes navigation possible. In the fiction its effects are not uniform: some systems were swallowed, some were isolated for decades of subjective time, and some emerged in a different state to the one they entered. It is the event that ends one era of the setting and begins the next, and every faction in this game exists on one side of it or the other.
A warp storm that tore across the galaxy from end to end, splitting Imperial space in two and cutting off entire regions from Terra. In the setting it is the event that ends one era and begins the next.
Tabletop identity, as established by Games Workshop. It says nothing about the video game. What has actually been shown
Nothing has been published about whether the Rift appears in the game at all. The announcement describes conquering planets and upgrading a fleet, which implies movement between star systems, and says nothing about what governs that movement. The campaign map itself has been shown — PC Gamer wrote about the game’s map reveals on 1 May 2026 — but nothing in what we were able to read connects it to the Rift. Treat any claim that the Rift is a map feature, a mechanic or a story element as someone reasoning from the tabletop, because no source states it.
What to watch next
The open question is what a strategy game does with a barrier that is not a line. Every Total War campaign map has used terrain to make some directions expensive and others cheap, and that is what gives a border meaning. A warp storm is a different kind of obstacle: it does not sit between two provinces, it makes a region unreachable, temporarily, without warning, and sometimes in only one direction. That is either an interesting mechanic or an unplayable one, and Creative Assembly has announced nothing on the subject. Information correct as of 17 August 2026.
What is not known
These questions have no published answer as of 4 September 2026. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.
