Where this the game stands
Warhammer Community’s announcement of 12 December 2025 states that Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 releases for PC and will also be the franchise’s debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That last part is the genuinely new information: after twenty-five years, this is the first Total War built to run on a console. The block below shows what the distributor’s own listing carries today.
What the tabletop establishes
Total War has been a PC series for its entire existence, and the reason is not habit. Its battles are commanded through a camera that flies over a field of thousands of soldiers, with orders given by dragging formations across terrain — a mouse-and-keyboard interface as much as a genre. Earlier attempts to bring the series to other devices produced smaller, simplified games rather than ports. A console version of the full thing is therefore an interface problem before it is a technical one.
What has actually been shown
What has been published: the three platforms, and the word debut. What has not: whether the console versions release at the same time as the PC one, whether they carry the same content, how the campaign map is navigated with a controller, or how unit selection works without a mouse. The distributor’s listing names the platforms it sells for, which is not the same thing as the full platform list — a store lists what it sells.
What to watch next
The open question is what the console version costs the PC one. There are two ways to bring a game like this to a controller. One is to build a second interface and leave the game intact, which is expensive and has been done well before. The other is to simplify the underlying systems until a controller is enough — fewer units, shallower campaign, less to manage — and that changes the game for everyone, including the people playing it with a mouse. Nothing in the announcement indicates which, and the series has no precedent to reason from because it has never done this. Information correct as of 18 August 2026.
What is not known
These questions have no published answer as of 12 December 2025. They are listed because an absence of information is information — and because we would rather name the gap than fill it.
